After Chinese exercises, US and Philippines conduct largest military drills near disputed waters

For the first time in decades, the United States and the Philippines started their largest military drills, including live-fire training, in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, likely infuriating China.

The yearly drills with old treaty friends named ‘Balikatan’ will run up to April 28 and will involve around 17,500 military men. US warships, fighter jets, Patriot missiles, Lockheed Martin‘s HIMARS rocket launchers, and anti-tank Javelins will also be displayed, according to US and Philippine officials. The term “responsibility” refers to the act of determining whether or not a person is responsible for the actions of another person.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. launched this endeavor to safeguard the Philippines’ territorial rights in the South China Sea by strengthening military connections with the United States and allowing batches of American personnel to stay in additional Philippine military facilities under the 2014 defense pact.

A Philippine spokesman for Balikatan, Col. Michael Logico said, “We are not provoking anybody by simply exercising.” “This is actually a form of deterrence. Deterrence is when we are discouraging other parties from invading us.”

According to Logico, who provided details on the live drill, allied forces will stage an offshore for the first time this month, with both US and Filipino forces sinking a 200-foot (61-meter) target vessel in Philippine territorial waters off the western province of Zambales in a coordinated airstrike and artillery bombardment.

Denying any country’s involvement, Filipino military officials said the maneuver was intended to strengthen the country’s coastline defenses.

The US Embassy in Manila noted that such field scenarios will “test the allies’ capabilities in combined arms live-fire, information and intelligence sharing, communications between maneuver units, logistics operations, and amphibious operations.”

US Marine Maj. Gen. Eric Austin said, “The relationships that we have, that we build into these exercises, will make us faster to respond to conflict, crisis, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief.”

Logico said that with the help of these drills, they will reclaim an island in western Palawan province that had been occupied by hostile forces. The term “responsibility” refers to the act of determining whether or not a person is responsible for his or her own actions.

China has repeatedly warned the US against increasing its military presence in the region. In a press conference, Chinese Foreign Minister Mao Ning stated that such activities will only increase tensions and undermine regional peace and stability. Taiwan’s defense ministry claimed it detected nine Chinese warships and 26 planes around the self-governing island shortly after China announced the end of its military drills.
