Apple set to shift from lightning port to USB Type-C

Apple, the US-based tech giant, is apparently going to switch its iPhone charging connector from lightning port to USB-C as the standard charging method for its upcoming iPhone 15 series, following months of pressure and rejection. According to Bloomberg, Apple has confirmed September 12 as the date for its iPhone 15 event, as the corporation also plans to revolutionize gadget manufacturing with 3D printers. However, if the business had its way, it would remain with its current Lightning connector for a few more years before completely eliminating ports from its smartphones.

However, the European Union forced its hand after the parliament of the 27-nation bloc approved new rules requiring tech companies to include a universal charging port in electronic gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets, cameras, e-readers, earbuds, and other devices by the end of next year. Back in October 2022, the proposal received 602 votes in favor and 13 votes against it. As a result, the EU parliament’s vote confirms the prior agreement to make USB-C charges used by Android-based smartphones the continent’s standard.

Users will now be able to use a single charging cable for several Apple devices like iPhones, Macs, and iPads

To put it simply, all devices in the EU will be required to have the same charging connection in order to reduce e-waste. According to Bloomberg, when Apple unveils the iPhone 15 later this month, USB-C ports will be included on all four new phone models, as well as the AirPods Pro. Notably, this is the second time in Apple’s history that the company has replaced its charging port for its iPhones, having done it over a decade ago with the iPhone 5. Apple is expected to tout the switch to USB-C connectors as a key win for customers at the next presentation. Users will now be able to utilize a single charging cable for several Apple devices like iPhones, Macs, and iPads, according to the new rule.

The change is also expected to result in record-breaking data transfer speeds in new high-end iPhone models. However, one of the most significant advantages of the future iPhone 15 series is that users will no longer have to scurry for an Apple charger while they are away from home because they will be able to borrow one from other non-Apple users.
