Algerian Boxer Reaches Semifinals Amidst Gender Eligibility Debate

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has secured a place in the semifinals of the women’s 66-kg category at the Paris Olympics 2024, ensuring at least a bronze medal. Khelif achieved a unanimous 5-0 victory over Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori, marking an emotional milestone in her controversial journey.

Tears of triumph

Khelif, visibly emotional, burst into tears and embraced her coaches after descending from the ring. This victory follows a week of intense scrutiny and media attention due to a gender eligibility controversy. Her triumph over Hamori guarantees a podium finish and highlights her determination to aim for gold in the upcoming bout.

A controversial path

The controversy surrounding Khelif began when she defeated Italian boxer Angela Carini in a 46-second bout, leading to Carini’s withdrawal amidst claims of unfair competition against a biologically male opponent. This incident reignited the debate over gender eligibility in sports, particularly in light of Khelif’s past.

In the 2023 World Championships, Khelif was disqualified before her gold medal bout in New Delhi after failing a gender eligibility test. The International Boxing Association (IBA) deemed her ineligible, sparking a significant uproar within the sporting community and criticism of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) criteria.

Looking ahead

Khelif is set to compete in her semifinal match on Sunday, bringing her closer to an Olympic gold medal. Regardless of the outcome, her place on the podium is assured with at least a bronze medal, marking a significant achievement in her career amidst ongoing debates and controversies.
