Carlos Alcaraz becomes the youngest year-end number one in ATP history

The top-ranked player in 2022, according to the year-end ATP Rankings released on Monday, was Carlos Alcaraz of Spain. In 50 iterations of the year-end ATP Rankings, the 19-year-old is now the youngest player to hold the top spot.

Rafael Nadal, a countryman of Alcaraz and a 22-time Grand Slam victor, came in second. Alcaraz and Nadal are notable for being the first countrymen to place in the top two positions since 1996.

Alcaraz came in 32nd place at the conclusion of 2021. He had a dramatic rise in 2022 thanks to an outstanding run. This year, he won five of his six ATP titles, including a US Open victory that set a record. Alcaraz, 19 became the youngest winner since Nadal who won the French Open in 2005.

Alcaraz made the biggest surge to the top spot at the end of the year

As previously said, Alcaraz, 19, has risen to the top of the ATP Rankings for the first time in 50 editions. He is the first player to finish atop the rankings since Andy Roddick in 2003 who is not Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, or Andy Murray. In ATP Rankings history, the Spaniard made the biggest surge to the top spot at the end of the year.

2022 year-end ATP Rankings

A look at the 2022 year-end ATP Rankings: 1) Alcaraz, 2) Nadal, 3) Casper Ruud, 4) Stefanos Tsitsipas, 5) Djokovic, 6) Felix Auger-Aliassime, 7) Daniil Medvedev, 8) Andrey Rublev, 9) Taylor Fritz, and 10) Hubert Hurkacz.

Nadal attains these feats

Nadal came in second place in the final ATP Rankings after winning the Australian Open and Roland Garros this year. The 36-year-old is the oldest person to place in the Top 2. Nadal placed in the Top 10 for an unprecedented 18th year in a row (emulates Federer). Since Americans Pete Sampras and Michael Chang finished first and second, Alcaraz and Nadal are the first nationals to do so (1996).

Nadal finishes with a 39-8 win-loss record

The Spaniard defeated all odds to win the Australian Open in January. He broke the Grand Slam title tie with Federer and Djokovic. The next year, Nadal won the French Open for a record-breaking 14th time. Although an injury hampered his performance at Wimbledon, the 36-year-old was ruthless on his way there. Nadal has a 39-8 win-loss record at the end of the season.

Comparisons with Nadal!

Alcaraz has established himself as a versatile player who likes playing aggressively from the baseline. He frequently uses his forehand, which has resulted in victories. The Spaniard uses a torrent of groundstrokes to push back his opponent, just like Nadal does. Alcaraz covers the court with amazing sprints. The experts are compelled to compare him to Nadal because of all these qualities.

What about Djokovic?

Djokovic recently won his sixth ATP Finals championship after defeating Ruud in the head-to-head contest. The 35-year-old won the competition at the oldest age ever. This year, Djokovic won five ATP championships, including his 21st Grand Slam at Wimbledon. He also extended the record by winning the 38th ATP Masters 1000 title (Italian Open). For the fifteenth time in 16 years, Djokovic placed in the Top 5.

Other interesting records

In 2022, Alcaraz (16 weeks), Djokovic (20 weeks), and Medvedev shared the top rank (16 weeks). Since Roddick and Juan Carlos Ferrero in 2003, Alcaraz and Medvedev became the only player duo to reach the top in the same season, according to ATP. The only Polish player to place in the Top 10 is Hurkacz (second consecutive year).
