The question of whether this signal is truly extraterrestrial or just another ‘false positive’ remains unresolved. In 2021, Breakthrough Listen detected a similar radio signal from the same region near Proxima Centauri, which later turned out to be interference from Earth-based technology. “The signal, instead of being the giant buzz of everything in the universe that we hear through all radio telescopes, was a narrow electromagnetic spectrum,” Holland explained.
