Alien Discourse: A Societal Threat, Warns British Scholar

For centuries, humans have been captivated by the possibility of life beyond Earth. From alleged UFO sightings to claims of government cover-ups, the fascination with extraterrestrials persists. Recently, former US intelligence officer Luis Elizondo asserted that aliens are hiding on Earth and posing a threat to humanity. Additionally, UFO enthusiast Jaime Maussan showcased so-called alien mummies at a Mexican congressional hearing, further fueling the debate.

The perils of alien chatter

However, a new paper cautions that the rampant speculation about extraterrestrials is creating a “widespread societal problem.”

“This belief is slightly paradoxical as we have zero evidence that aliens even exist,” Tony Milligan, a research fellow in the philosophy of ethics at King’s College London, wrote for The Conversation.

Milligan argues that the notion of aliens making contact by visiting Earth is far-fetched.

“What’s more, given the vast distances between star systems, it seems odd we’d only learn about them from a visit. Evidence for aliens is more likely to come from signals from faraway planets,” he added.

Dangerous statistics and conspiracy theories

Milligan highlights alarming statistics showing that nearly a quarter of Americans believe they have seen a UFO. He contends that recent federal hearings on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs) and UFOs are further fueling conspiracy theories, potentially undermining democratic institutions.

Notably, Elizondo also claimed that the US government has long been aware of extraterrestrial vehicles and is concealing this information. A pre-UAP commission 2019 Gallup poll revealed that 68 percent of people believe “the US government knows more about UFOs than it is telling,” Milligan said.

Hindrance to legitimate science

Milligan warns that the incessant discussions on aliens could impede genuine scientific efforts to discover extraterrestrial life.

“Too much background noise about UFOs and UAPs can also get in the way of legitimate science communication about the possibility of finding microbial extraterrestrial life,” Milligan states.

As the debate continues, Milligan’s insights serve as a cautionary reminder of the potential societal dangers posed by unsubstantiated alien talk.
