New Warner Bros. owners plan to explore more supporting characters in DC

According to reports, Warner Bros.’ new owners want to explore more DC supporting characters to broaden the DCEU. AT&T made an announcement a week ago that they had completed a deal to merge Warner Bros. Media and Discovery Inc. Former Discovery Inc. President and CEO David Zaslav will lead the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. It will bring all of the company’s popular properties under one roof.

From Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy to the more recently established DC Extended Universe, DC has been one of Warner Bros.’ most profitable brands for years. Beginning with Man of Steel in 2013, Warner Bros. collaborated with Zack Snyder to create a DC cinematic universe that could compete with the MCU. With Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and later Justice League receiving mixed reviews, Warner Bros. had a rocky start. When the company began to make more stand-alone solo pictures, they began to see more success.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new CEO wants to tell more stories featuring DC’s supporting cast. Zaslav is rumored to be seeking to resurrect popular figures such as Superman while also utilizing the possibilities of second-billed characters. The report did not specify which characters Warner Bros. Discovery is planning to explore. Films like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash, which will be released in 2023, will still be part of the bigger DCEU storyline.

They’ve made moves in recent years to expand on additional characters who aren’t directly tied to Snyder’s initial idea. Most recently, Warner Bros. released The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, and set in a separate universe than Joker. Disney has made billions by tying every MCU project into a larger story, but it appears that Warner Bros. Discovery, however, will continue to expand the DC universe without focusing on tying everything together. Using supporting characters in DC to broaden the universe may be a terrific method to do it.
