Old, inactive Twitter handles are being sold by Elon Musk's X for as high as $50,000: Report

Elon Musk’s X, the social media network formerly known as Twitter, is selling decommissioned user accounts for $50,000 and above. According to Forbes, a unit within the corporation known as the @Handle unit has begun to work on a handle marketplace to sell account names that customers who originally registered them have left unused. Notably, this comes just months after Musk announced plans to launch such a program shortly. According to emails obtained by Forbes, the @Handle Team is actively working to sell unused user handles. According to the publication, X has already sent out solicitations to potential purchasers, seeking a fixed fee of $50,000 to begin the account acquisition. These emails were sent by active X employees, who mentioned that the company had made recent updates to its @Handle guidelines, procedures, and fees.

Elon Musk has stated his aim to turn X into an “everything app.”

Notably, after purchasing the microblogging service, Musk hinted at his intention to sell the previous usernames. “Bots and trolls” have taken a “vast number” of handles, he tweeted days after acquiring Twitter. Several reports in January of this year stated that the billionaire was preparing to free out as many as 1.5 billion usernames. X has already started eliminating dormant accounts from its site in May. According to Forbes, X’s username registration policy still stated that “unfortunately, we cannot release inactive usernames at this time” as of Friday evening. Its “inactive account policy,” on the other hand, advised users to log in every 30 days to avoid being labeled as inactive. However, it also stated that X was not releasing inactive usernames.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk has stated his aim to turn X into an “everything app.” In a statement, the billionaire stated that the redesigned platform would enable “comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world.” Musk also hinted at an unusual new function for the microblogging site—dating—in a recent staff meeting. Musk stated that a person’s X posts can be “the biggest indicator” of whether they are someone you’d want to hire. “I believe the same is true in terms of romance.” Finding someone on the platform Obviously, I found someone, and friends of mine have also found people on the platform. And you can tell if you’re a good match based on what they write,” he added.
