The Hilton hotel chain is deviating from usual hiring practices by encouraging job applicants to submit TikTok videos rather than traditional resumes. According to the Guardian, the business posted a video on its TikTok account, @hiremehiltonau, describing the “recruitment process at Hilton” and inviting candidates to exhibit their eligibility in a one-minute video. In a 34-second film, Hilton advises new workers to select areas of interest and submit a little video demonstrating how they would improve the guest experience. The ad instructs viewers to create TikTok videos identifying Hilton and using the hashtag #hiremehilton. Hilton informs those who are not on TikTok that traditional written CVs are still accepted via their website.
Recruiting millennials?
According to Mary Hogg, Hilton Australasia’s regional human resources director, the TikTok project intends to attract Gen Z workers. According to Tom Earls, a partner at Fair Work Lawyers, there is nothing legally prohibiting an employer from requesting TikToks as part of the job application process. However, he emphasized the importance of companies ensuring that such criteria do not have an undue impact on applicants, perhaps leading to age discrimination or other ethical difficulties. TikTok launched a similar concept, #TikTokResumes, in 2021, encouraging applicants to display their talents through videos resembling a “personal essay” with looped-in audio.
