Creator Rewards Program: TikTok to incentivize creators to make money with longer videos and subscriptions

TikTok announced Tuesday that more creators will soon be able to earn money through subscriptions and longer-form videos through its Creator Rewards Program.

What is the TikTok Creator Rewards Program?

The platform announced Tuesday that it will expand its subscription feature, which currently allows creators to offer monthly subscriptions for livestreams only. This gives viewers subscriber badges on their profiles, as well as custom emotes designed by the creators they follow, for use in LIVE chats. Creators can also enable subscriber-only chats while streaming to interact exclusively with their paid audiences.

TikTok announced in a news release that the expanded program will also allow non-LIVE creators to monetize through subscriptions. The feature will initially be available only to those who have been invited to try it, but eligible non-LIVE creators will be able to sign up in coming weeks.

To support the rise in long-form storytelling on the app, TikTok’s Creativity Program, which was introduced last year to reward creators for publishing longer videos, is set to leave beta as the new Creator Rewards Program. TikTok stated that the program will reward “high-quality, original” videos longer than one minute, with content evaluated based on four key criteria: originality, play duration, search value, and viewer engagement.

TikTok reports that viewers now spend more than half of their time watching longer-form content, which the app first allowed in 2022.

“Longer videos have unleashed a wide range of possibilities for our community, providing creators with added flexibility to express themselves and embrace creative freedom without limits,” the news release said.

TikTok reported that total creator revenue has increased by more than 250% under the beta Creativity program

TikTok reported that total creator revenue has increased by more than 250% under the beta Creativity Program in the last six months, with the number of creators earning $50,000 per month nearly doubling.

TikTok is also transforming its Creator Portal, an online hub of educational resources, into a more comprehensive Creator Academy to help creators better understand their choices.
