Julius Robert Oppenheimer, an American scientist, and theoretical physicist, has once again come into the spotlight thanks to Christopher Nolan‘s film Oppenheimer. This generation has to be aware of his history, as well as the reasons and methods he used to create the atomic bomb during World War II. In the movie, Cillian Murphy plays the title role. Who was Julius Robert Oppenheimer?

Julius Robert Oppenheimer was born in New York on April 22, 1904.  Oppenheimer rose to prominence as a scientist and theoretical physicist. During World War II, he was given the task of conducting research, designing, and creating the atomic bomb. The Manhattan Project, often known as “Project Y,” was an initiative of the Manhattan Engineer District in New Mexico that included the development of the atomic bomb. The US government initiative sought to create a nuclear weapon prior to the Germans. Oppenheimer passed away in Princeton, New Jersey, on February 18, 1967.

Oppenheimer was reportedly upset when the atomic bomb was detonated twice because he opposed using it in a nuclear strike on Japan

Oppenheimer was reportedly upset when the atomic bomb was detonated twice because he opposed using it in a nuclear strike on Japan. A television interview with Oppenheimer has been released on PlenilunePictures. Oppenheimer uses a passage from the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu scripture, in the interview that follows the nuclear strike, which reads, “Now I have become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Oppenheimer’s exact words were: “We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed (after the nuclear attack), and a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered a line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince (Arjuna) that he should do his duty, and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form, and says: “Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds”. The actual line in the Gita is: “Kaalo asmi loka kshaya kritpraviddho” (Chapter 11 Shloka 32), which reportedly translates to: “I am Death, the destroyer of worlds”.

In 1945, the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were struck by atomic bombs. At exactly 8:15 am, the US exploded the first atomic bomb, known as “Little Boy,” on the Japanese city of Hiroshima from the B-29 bomber Enola Gay. It happened on August 6, 1945. At 11:02 a.m., the US exploded the second atomic weapon, known as “Fat Man,” on the Japanese city of Nagasaki from the Bockscar, another B-29 bomber. It was Monday, August 9, 1945. World War II was concluded by the nuclear holocaust.
